Residents of Thoi An Ward in District 12, Ho Chi Minh City have been working with police forces for nearly a month in a joint effort to stop adverts from drowning the streets near their homes.
For many years, illegally placed adverts in public have been a source of frustration for residents of Ho Chi Minh City.
Given simple directives from the Ministry of Public Security, the Party Committee and the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City launched a movement among the people and police forces of Thoi An Ward.

Locals took to the streets with whatever tools they had multiple times between mid-February and the beginning of March in order to scrub away the many illegally placed adverts that have been stuck to building walls, as well as traffic and electric poles.
Meanwhile, residents and police forces arrested a total of four individuals in the act of covering the streets of Thoi An Ward with more adverts on three separate occasions, two of which occurred on March 2 and the final one on Saturday last week.
Cung Quang Ha, chairman of the Thoi An Ward People’s Committee, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper in an interview on Sunday that this clean-up campaign had been in the works since 2023.
“We finished cleaning up a street last week, only to find it already covered in new adverts the following morning,” Ha said.

“These violators often work late at night or early in the morning to escape detection.
“Our officers have to disguise themselves for a chance to make an arrest.
“We are also working with authorities in other parts of the city to expand investigations and solve the problem from its roots.”
Cleaning up the streets has proved to become more challenging with recent cases of gambling sites being spray-painted on walls.
Thoi An Ward's police assert that addressing this issue long-term necessitates public adherence to advertising laws and active participation in campaigns to remove illicitly placed advertisements in public spaces.
