The buffer zone of U Minh Thuong District in Kien Giang Province, southern Vietnam has experienced severe land subsidence induced by a prolonged drought, prompting local authorities to declare a state of emergency on Wednesday.
The Kien Giang administration urged U Minh Thuong authorities to prioritize addressing landslides and land subsidence, while also emphasizing the importance of raising public awareness about the measures being implemented to mitigate these natural disasters.
The provincial Department of Transport received the urgent assignment of swiftly repairing roads affected by land subsidence to restore normal traffic flow in the impacted areas.
Landslides and land subsidence have battered U Minh Thuong since early last month due to prolonged drought, according to Duong Quoc Khoi, vice-chairman of the People’s Committee of U Minh Thuong.
Natural disasters caused extensive damage to over 310 road segments and 26 local households, resulting in nearly VND84 billion (US$3.3 million) in losses.
The official added that 470 houses in the district are located adjacent to canals, with 54 at a high risk of subsidence.
