The banks of the Ba River running through Ia Pa District of Gia Lai Province in Vietnam’s Central Highlands experienced severe land subsidence and posed a threat to the lives of local residents as well as production activities, prompting the provincial administration to declare a state of emergency on Friday.
River flow alterations resulted in much of the farming and residential land along the river being eroded and swept away, with the Chu Rang 2 power pump station and the Ia Klam Bridge being hit the hardest.
The district discovered that 19 locations were battered by land subsidence, with a total length of over 16 kilometers.
When the flood and rainy season comes every year, more pieces of land are swept away as a result of land erosion and subsidence.
Apart from leaving a negative impact on the daily lives and assets of local people, the increasingly severe land subsidence left traffic and irrigation facilities at an elevated risk of failure.
During a recent visit to the affected locations, leaders of the provincial administration tasked local authorities in Ia Pa to urgently adopt measures to cope with the aftermath of land subsidence.
