After Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh registered to donate his tissues and organs after death and called on local residents to voluntarily register as organ donors on May 19, an additional 10,000 people have responded to his call, said Associate Professor Dr. Dong Van He, director of the Vietnam National Coordinating Center for Human Organ Transplantation.

Thus, the number of people registering to donate their tissues and organs after death in Vietnam has increased to nearly 96,000.

These figures prove that the campaign of registering tissue and organ donations has spread, He said.

However, the number of such registrations in Vietnam remains lower than that in other countries with similar cultures, He reported.

The number of brain-dead people in Vietnam donating tissues and organs remains low as up to 94 percent of transplanted organs were sourced from living donors, He added.

Vietnam, with a population of about 100 million people, has 60 hospitals engaging in the mobilization of tissue and organ donation registrations.

Meanwhile, 156 medical facilities in Malaysia have got involved in the job while the country has only 34 million people.

He informed that the Vietnam National Coordinating Center for Human Organ Transplantation was expanding the network of hospitals involved in calling for registrations for tissue and organ donations.

How to register to donate tissues, organs after death in Vietnam?

Pursuant to prevailing regulations, citizens who are aged 18 and above and have full capacity for civil acts can register to donate their tissues and organs.

They can print out a form on the portal of the Vietnam National Coordinating Center for Human Organ Transplantation, fill in the form, and send it plus a photo of themselves and a copy of their ID cards or passports to the center’s headquarters at Viet Duc University Hospital at 40 Trang Thi Street in Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi.

They must include the phone number of the recipient, 0915060550, on the envelopes containing the above papers.

Those wishing to register to donate their tissues and organs can also directly make the registrations at Viet Duc University Hospital.

They should bring a photo of themselves and a copy of their ID cards or passports.
