A sea turtle was sighted around Hon Mun Island in Nha Trang Bay, south-central Vietnam last week for the first time after many years, a local official said on Tuesday.
Huynh Binh Thai, head of the management board of Nha Trang Bay, said a specialist of the board spotted the sea turtle on October 4.
This is a positive signal proving improvements to the local marine environment, Thai added.
Thai explained that sea turtles are usually found in clean waters, noting this was the first sighting in Nha Trang Bay in many years.
hroughout their life cycle, sea turtles inhabit a range of environments, from beaches and coral reefs to drifting with ocean currents.
Spotting sea turtles near coastal waters is a rare occurrence.
It takes a sea turtle 30-50 years to mature, and only one in 1,000 sea turtles can survive until the maturity period.
According to a report by the management board, sea turtles regularly nested on the beaches and islands of Nha Trang Bay decades ago.
However, their population has declined significantly, largely due to hunting and the impact of coastal and island development projects.
