Many dogs without a muzzle have been roaming freely in Nha Trang, a popular tourist city in Khanh Hoa Province, south-central Vietnam, especially on beaches, terrifying local and international tourists.

A seaside park on Pham Van Dong Street in the city was seen accommodating several dogs without a muzzle or leash on Tuesday afternoon.

They wandered all the corners of the park, stressing park-goers.

Lying on the pavement near a hotel on Tran Phu Street in Loc Tho Ward, two canines without a muzzle became a worry for pedestrians, according to the observation of a Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporter on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, many stray dogs were running across streets to get to the beach, impacting motorists and pedestrians.

Nguyen Le Tien, a 52-year-old resident of Vinh Hoa Ward, said that the park is always filled with locals and tourists, but some have taken their dogs without a muzzle to the place, raising concerns over dog attacks.

“I hope the local authorities will quickly send forces to catch these stray dogs. Many other major cities such as Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang City have adopted drastic measures to handle free-roaming dogs,” Tien said.

Le Thanh Tuyet, 42, a tourist from Lam Dong Province in the Central Highlands region, recounted that she was taking a stroll in the park in the city when a dog came rushing, startling her.

She believed despite dogs potentially being vaccinated, they are still a danger to tourists and locals.

Luu Thanh Nhan, vice-chairman of the Nha Trang People’s Committee, said that the municipal administration is directing all the communes and wards to set up teams in charge of catching stray dogs in the city.

Only Vinh Nguyen Ward is piloting a stray dog-catching program.

“Each commune and ward will have a team responsible for dealing with free-roaming dogs,” he affirmed.

Ngo Thi Minh Lieu, a member of the stray dog catching team in Vinh Nguyen Ward, said that after catching these canines, the team would keep them within 48 hours and inform residents of the cases so that their owners could reclaim their pets.
