A garden located along a national highway in Chau Thanh District under An Giang Province, southern Vietnam has become home to thousands of wild birds, mainly storks and herons, creating a fascinating sight for passers-by.
During the Lunar New Year holiday, or Tet, many drivers traveling along National Highway 91 in An Chau Town in the district were surprised to see countless white storks and herons soaring above and nesting on the trees in a roadside garden.
"Though this garden is situated along National Highway 91, a busy road, many wild birds have come to settle. Some nested on tall tree branches by the roadside,” said Kim Tu, a local resident of An Giang Province.

Huynh Van Nhut, 75, the caretaker of the garden, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the garden covers around two hectares.
Some 28 years ago, when he first moved to stay at the garden of a relative, no birds could be found there.
However, around three years later, approximately 25 years ago, storks began arriving to nest and breed in the area.
Over time, the population of these wild birds has steadily increased.
Every morning, the flock of wild birds goes out to search for food and returns in the evening, he revealed.
“I enjoy watching them return each evening. I wish to keep the garden safe to allow these wild birds to settle,” Nhut said.

In addition to Nhut, another guardian of the garden, Nguyen Ky Phat, 63, has been living in the garden for over a decade.
He is responsible for taking care of the birds and ensuring their protection.
In recent years, more birds have come to the garden, even settling on the trees near the front of the property, he said.
Despite the busy location near National Highway 91 and surrounding residential areas, the birds have chosen this garden as their nesting ground.
"I don’t really understand why they chose this place,” said Phat.
“Sometimes, it could be because they find the trees here suitable, or perhaps they feel that the human presence doesn’t disturb them, so they keep coming back and increasing their numbers,” he added.
