All IELTS tests in Vietnam will be available in computer format only after March 29 to provide a faster, more convenient, and efficient candidate journey.

This change will not impact the global quality and reliability of IELTS certification.

Currently, candidates can choose to take their IELTS test either on paper or on a computer.

On Tuesday, the British Council and the International Development Program of Australian Universities and Colleges (IDP) released separate statements to confirm the paper and digital versions have the same test format, questions, and scoring.

Computer-based IELTS tests offer significant benefits, including faster results (in approximately two days), quicker scheduling, and allowing test takers as late as one day before registration closes depending on location and date.

Examinees can access more frequent test dates and enjoy the One Skill Retake (OSR) option, a new feature available exclusively with the computer that allows a retake of one part of the test.

Moreover, digital IELTS is designed to help candidates with a simple style, enabling them to focus fully on their test and achieve maximum efficiency.

According to the British Council, IELTS is shifting to computer testing in certain markets to provide test takers with a more flexible, convenient, and efficient experience.

“This change will allow quicker result delivery, more test dates, and a streamlined testing process – all while maintaining the same rigorous standards for quality and fairness that IELTS is known for,” the agency said.

Candidates registered for paper-based IELTS tests after March 29 will be contacted by test centers and offered alternatives: a free switch to the computer-based IELTS exam, rescheduling to a paper-based test on or before March 29 at no cost, or a full refund of the test fee.

An IELTS certification is the world’s most popular English proficiency test for postgraduate education and global migration.

The score is recognized by over 12,500 institutions worldwide, including educational organizations, recruiters, governments, and professional agencies.

In Vietnam, many universities accept IELTS certificates as a substitute for English proficiency test scores.

According to statistics published by IELTS, the average score of Vietnamese candidates in the 2023-24 IELTS Academic tests is 6.2 on the 0- to 9-point scale.

This places Vietnam in the 29th position among 39 nations and territories hosting IELTS Academic tests.

The previous year, Vietnam was ranked 23rd out of 40 hosting nations with the same average score of 6.2.
