The administration of Thanh Hoa Province in north-central Vietnam has levied an administrative fine of over VND440 million (US$17,310) on Song Duong Trading Co. Ltd. for environmental violations at its swine facility.
The company was fined VND65 million for discharging wastewater with pollutant levels exceeding environmental standards by 1.5-3 times.
As part of the remedial measures, the company was told to consistently operate its centralized wastewater treatment system to ensure any treated wastewater meets environmental standards before being discharged into the environment.
The company was required to cover the cost of wastewater sampling, at over VND4 million ($157), which will be paid to the Center for Environmental Monitoring and Protection, under the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment.
The firm was also fined VND370 million ($14,550) for failing to maintain regular operations of its wastewater treatment system, which was found non-functional during authorities’ inspections.
Its violations carried a total penalty of more than VND440 million.
The company, whose legal representative and director is Trinh Thi Dieu Hang, has operated the pig farm in Thanh Xuan Commune, Nhu Xuan District for years.
The farm houses 2,400 sows, using foreign technology in its operations.
