Military forces in Binh Phuoc Province, southern Vietnam confirmed on Tuesday that they had safely retrieved and disposed of a 227kg Mk82 bomb, discovered by a local farmer while excavating an irrigation pond for durian trees in Bu Dang District.
Nguyen Ly Tuong, a resident of Bom Bo Commune, reported the find to local authorities after his machinery struck the massive wartime bomb buried underground.
Responding swiftly, the Bu Dang District Military Command secured the site, marked the area, and stationed guards to prevent any accidents.
Officials say that during the war in Vietnam, this bomb would destroy structures and cause ground-level or subterranean damage.
The 1.5-2m unexploded ordnance, missing its tail section, remained capable of detonating if being exposed to strong impacts or high heat.
The disposal operation involved sappers from the provincial Military Command, who transported and neutralized the bomb without any incident.
According to the district military command, Bu Dang was a fierce battleground during the war between 1965 and 1975, leaving a significant number of unexploded bombs and landmines in the area.
These remnants continue to pose a risk to residents engaging in agricultural activities such as land clearing, plowing, and pond digging.
To mitigate the risks, local military units have launched awareness campaigns to educate residents about identifying and avoiding unexploded ordnance.
Authorities encourage the voluntary surrender of weapons, ammunition, and explosives, urging residents to report discoveries promptly for safe removal.
