Two provinces in Vietnam's Mekong Delta have warned that the sharp rise in domestic water demand could lead to shortages during the upcoming Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) holiday and have urged residents to store water and use it sparingly.
The Center for Rural Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation of Bac Lieu Province has advised communes, wards, and towns to store domestic water for Tet, which falls on January 29.
According to the center, the sharp increase in water demand during Tet could overload water supply systems, especially during peak hours, leading to weak water pressure, shortages, or damage to the water supply network.
The center recommended that localities inform residents, agencies, businesses, schools, and medical stations about the importance of storing water in available containers at home from Thursday until after Tet.
It urged people to use water sparingly and avoid wasting water to ensure sufficient supply for daily needs.
The center also advised those who plan to leave the province for the holiday to turn off the main water valve in their home in order to prevent loss and waste.
The Center for Rural Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation of neighboring Soc Trang Province issued a similar notice warning of increased water demand and the potential overload of the water supply system during peak hours.
This center also recommended water storage from Wednesday until after Tet.
People are encouraged to report any serious water dearth in their areas by calling the center’s hotline at 02993.888.866.
