A strong cold air mass will bring cold and rainy weather to the north starting Saturday night, while the central region is forecast to experience cloudy skies and the south will stay sunny, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
The center announced that after affecting the northeast on Saturday night, the strong cold front will gradually spread to the north-central, northwest, central, and parts of the south-central regions.
As a result, the north and north-central regions will experience scattered showers and thunderstorms.
The mountainous areas will become bitterly cold, with the possibility of frost on high mountains.
Temperatures during this cold spell, lasting until Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year), which falls on January 29, are expected to plunge to nine to 12 Celsius degrees in the north and north-central regions, six to eight Celsius degrees in the northern mountainous areas, and below three Celsius degrees in some high mountain locations.
In the areas from Quang Binh Province to Thua Thien-Hue Province, temperatures will range from 14 to 17 Celsius degrees, and from Da Nang City to Quang Ngai Province, they will be between 16 and 19 Celsius degrees.
Cloudy skies will be prevalent from the north down to Thua Thien-Hue Province.
Meanwhile, the south will have light fog in the early morning and sunny weather during the day, with temperatures reaching 34-35 Celsius degrees at noon.
Travelers returning home for Tet are advised to rest and stay hydrated during long trips.
