The administration of Dong Nai Province, a neighbor of Ho Chi Minh City, is planning to pour nearly VND30 trillion (US$1.2 billion) into extending the city’s first metro line to the province, with a projected route of nearly 20 kilometers.
Metro line No. 1 in the southern metropolis opened to the public on December 22 last year after 12 years of construction, marking a historic milestone in the urban transport development of the city.
The metro line spans 19.7 kilometers, from Ben Thanh in District 1 to Suoi Tien Coach Station in Thu Duc City, including 2.6 kilometers of underground railway and 17.1 kilometers of elevated track.
Deputy chairman of the Dong Nai People's Committee Ho Van Ha on Monday chaired a meeting to discuss solutions for connecting metro line No. 1 with Dong Nai.
As per a proposal presented by South Transport Engineering Design Joint Stock Incorporated (TEDI South), the consulting firm for the project, the new section of the metro line will span over 21 kilometers.
The projected stretch will begin at Suoi Tien Coach Station and end at a depot set at Ho Nai 3 Commune in Trang Bom District, Dong Nai.

The first section, which spans 1.8 kilometers from Suoi Tien Coach Station to Station S0, will be implemented by Binh Duong Province.
The remaining 20-kilometer stretch will be carried out by Dong Nai.
TEDI South also put forward multiple options, including elevated and underground sections passing through Dong Nai.
The estimated cost for the section running through Dong Nai is around VND30 trillion.
Regarding the capital, the firm proposed three potential sources, including public investment from the province, a fund from the central budget, and official development assistance loans or proceeds of local bond issuance.
At the meeting, deputy chairman Ha tasked the provincial Department of Construction with forming a working group to develop an investment plan for the metro extension.
He expected the project to be listed as a priority project in the province.
In addition, he hinted at studying underground sections to preserve the province’s aesthetic appeal.
