Hanoi FC won a ticket to the AFC Cup inter-zone final after drawing with Turkmenistan’s Altyn Asyr in an away semifinal game on Tuesday.
The Vietnamese club beat the Central Asian side 5-4 on aggregate and will encounter either Bangladesh’s Abahani Dhaka or North Korea’s April 25, who will clash in the other inter-zone semifinal match later on Wednesday, in the play-off final on September 25 and October 2.
The Capital Team had edged past Altyn Asyr 3-2 on home soil on August 20 and they held the hosts to a 2-2 draw at Ashgabat Stadium in Ashgabat to advance.
Quang Hai scored a brace to put Hanoi in the lead last week but it was forward Van Quyet who inspired his club in the game in Turkmenistan.
Quyet netted two goals, each in the early minutes of the two halves. The 28-year-old skipper also converted from the spot to seal Hanoi’s 3-2 win at Hang Day Stadium.
Altyn Asyr were not hesitant at all to express their desire for a win, pressuring the Vietnamese side in the first ten minutes, but their haste led to no shots on target on the half-hour mark.
The visitors were patient enough to withstand the hosts’ attacks before staging deadly counterattacks.
Six minutes after midfielder Do Hung Dung’s attempt was denied by an Altyn Asyr defender on the goal line, Van Quyet put Hanoi in front in the 15th minute.
The captain darted past a few defenders and shot home from close range after a right-flank pass found him the penalty area.
He narrowly missed another opportunity on 38 minutes as his cunning free-kick was blocked by goalie Orazmuhamedow.
A minute later, Myrat Yagsyyev dribbled past two Hanoi defenders to face shot-stopper Nguyen Van Cong one-on-one before he failed to beat the goalkeeper.
Pape Omar left the Altyn Asyr defense line behind in the 44th minute but Orazmuhamedow was in control again.
In injury time of the first half, Serdar Geldiyew step forward to equalize from the spot following a Van Dung tackle against a host in the penalty area.
However, Altyn Asyr’s joy did not last long, as Van Quyet headed home six minutes after the break.
The hosts attacked fiercely after conceding the goal to no avail in the next 30 minutes.
But Altyn Asyr were given another spot kick after Moses committed a foul in the box. Geldiyew took it and beat Van Cong again in the 82nd minute.
The Turkmen club would have netted a third goal one minute later but for Van Cong’s excellence.
The visitors celebrated when the final whistle was blown.
