Vietnam secured a semi-final berth in women’s football at the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games after routing Indonesia 6-0 in their last group match in the Philippines on Friday afternoon.

Three goals for each half meant a comprehensive victory for the defending champions, who had claimed the highest title of women’s football in the 2017 SEA Games hosted by Malaysia thanks to a better goal difference than Thailand.

At Binan Football Stadium in the Filippino province of Laguna on Friday, Vietnam’s first goal was scored by Tuyet Dung as she found the Indonesian net from a left-wing free kick in the ninth minute.

Nguyen Thi Van scored in the 14th and 19th minutes to give Vietnam a 3-0 lead heading into the half-time break.

Huynh Nhu added a fourth five minutes after the restart and netted her second in the 61st minute.

The match ended with half a dozen goals for Vietnam as Tuyet Dung fired pass the Indonesian goalkeeper in the 84th minute.

Although Vietnam had been held to a 1-1 draw by Thailand in their opening match of the competition on Tuesday, Friday’s triumph helped them book a ticket to the semi-finals with four points after two games.

Meanwhile, Thailand and Indonesia will challenge each other in the final fixture of Group B on Monday to decide who will join Vietnam in the semi-finals, as well as determine the ranking of the group’s table.

The SEA Games are a biennial event governed by the Southeast Asian Games Federation under the supervision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Olympic Council of Asia.

The first edition of the event was held in 1959 and it has since grown to be one of the region’s largest sporting events, hosting athletes from the 11 countries in Southeast Asia.

This year’s SEA Games, in its 30th edition, are organized in the Philippines from November 30 to December 11, with athletes competing in 530 events across 56 sports.

Vietnam’s delegation to the 2019 SEA Games consists of 568 athletes competing in 43 sports.
