Vietnamese shooter Trinh Thu Vinh on Thursday won a ticket to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris after ranking fifth in women’s 10m air pistol at the 2023 ISSF World Shooting Championships.

Vinh is the second Vietnamese athlete that has claimed the 2024 Olympic qualification.

Before that, female cyclist Nguyen Thi That qualified after winning the gold medal at the 2023 Asian Road and Para Cycling Championships.

The 2023 ISSF World Shooting Championships is taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from August 14 to September 1.

The Vietnamese shooting team participated in the tournament with 10 shooters, namely Ha Minh Thanh, Lai Cong Minh, Le Thi Mong Tuyen, Nguyen Thanh Nam, Nguyen Thi Thao, Nguyen Thuy Trang, Pham Quang Huy, Phi Thanh Thao, Trinh Thu Vinh, and Vu Tien Nam.

In the women’s 10m air pistol event, although Vinh faced off against numerous excellent shooters in the world, she maintained a strong mental composure to perform exceptionally.

With a total score of 579, Vinh successfully advanced through the qualifiers and secured a spot in the final round.

This score was only one point short of her personal best record of 580 points.

By making it to the finals, Vinh simultaneously secured her spot in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, scheduled for July 26 to August 11, 2024, as one of the top eight athletes with the highest rankings in the women’s 10m air pistol qualifiers.

In the finals, the Vietnamese athlete continued to showcase her impressive performance.

She garnered a score of 175.6 points, placing her fifth overall.

Born in 2000, Vinh has been considered a talented athlete in Vietnamese shooting over the past few years.

She was discovered and trained by the experienced coach Nguyen Thi Nhung.

Subsequently, Vinh was recruited into the national team and trained by South Korean expert Park Chung Gun.

Since the 2016 Olympics in Brazil where shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh won a gold and a silver until now, Vinh has been the only Vietnamese shooting athlete to have surpassed the qualifiers to secure an official spot in the Olympics.

Previously, Xuan Vinh had participated in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo through an honor slot offered by the organizers.
