A participant in the Vietnam Ultra Marathon 2024 (VUM 2024), held in Hoa Binh Province, northern Vietnam, collapsed near the finish line and tragically passed away last week despite receiving urgent medical attention.

The runner, a Vietnamese citizen, was almost done with the 50km race at the VUM 2024, on Saturday when he suddenly showed signs of unstable health, according to the organizers of the event and local authorities.

“This athlete covered a considerable distance through challenging and mountainous terrain," a local official claimed.

“Unfortunately, he fainted along the way.

“Despite receiving emergency treatment, he did not make it.”

The runner passed away at Hoa Binh General Hospital on the next morning.

Prior to the race day, the organizers required all participants to disclose their health status and sign a health commitment statement, the official added.

The VUM 2024 took place in Chieng Chau Commune, Mai Chau District, Hoa Binh Province for a single day on Saturday.

The event attracted over 2,200 participants from 38 countries to take on trail running challenges ranging from a demanding 70km route to a more accessible 5km distance.
