Two Vietnamese female fighters clinched two gold medals at the 2024 Senior World Championships of the International Federation of Amateur Muaythai (IFMA) in Greece on Sunday.
In the women’s elite 45kg final, Huynh Ha Huu Hieu defeated Sofia Istratova of Russia in the first two rounds with the same score of 10-9.
Although Istratova fought back strongly in the third round and led 10-9, it was not enough for her to win the bout.
Huu Hieu was announced the winner and received the gold medal, successfully defending her world champion title, which is her third after triumphs in 2019 and 2021.
In the junior disciplines, Tran Thi Anh Tuyet claimed gold in the women’s U23 75kg category, defeating Salama Aljneibi of the UAE in all three rounds with scores of 10-9 each.
Anh Tuyet effortlessly dominated the fight, launching attacks freely and displaying her prowess against the less experienced opponent.
Despite the impressive performance of the two female athletes, the remaining seven finals of the Vietnamese team fell short of expectations, resulting in the delegation securing only seven silver medals.
With a tally of two gold medals, seven silvers, and nine bronzes, Vietnam claimed the ninth position out of 55 delegations.
The Russian team clinched the top spot overall with 14 gold medals, nine silvers, and nine bronzes, followed by Thailand in second place.
The IFMA Senior World Championships 2024, held in Greece from May 31 to June 10, attracted over 1,500 elite Muay Thai athletes from over 100 countries worldwide.
Vietnam was represented by 21 fighters in the competition.
