Vietnamese airlines have collectively canceled nearly 60 scheduled flights in preparation for tropical storm Doksuri’s expected landfall in the country’s north-central region today, September 15.
Low-cost carrier Vietjet said the cancelation affected 24 of its flights with scheduled departures on Thursday and Friday.
The cancellations include routes connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Thanh Hoa, Vinh, Hue, and Dong Hoi in the north-central region, and Chu Lai and Da Lat in the central region.
Vietnam Airlines on Thursday canceled nine flights from Hanoi to Da Nang and Hue, and from Ho Chi Minh City to Dong Hoi, Hue and Da Nang. On Friday, the national carrier will cancel 13 return flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Hue and Da Nang, and two services on the Da Nang-Da Lat routes.
Budget airline Jetstar also called off four flights scheduled for Thursday and 12 scheduled for Friday.
Tropical Storm Doksuri is the tenth to have hit Vietnam this year. It is expected to be the strongest storm in the past decade to hit the country.
Meteorologists are predicting it to hit mainland Vietnam near Nghe An and Quang Tri in the early afternoon on Friday with winds of up to 135kph.
While airlines have taken cautious measures, Vietnam Railways, the operator of the country’s north-to-south railway system, says that train services on Friday will operate as usual.
However, they are warning commuters who plan to travel to north-central areas that trains may make unexpected stops due to affects from the storm.
