Authorities in An Giang Province, southern Vietnam are verifying a one-minute video showing five elementary school girls smoking in the schoolyard, a local official said on Monday.
The video, which has been circulating on social media over the past few days, was recorded by a parent standing outside the school fence.0
The individual said that the footage was taken at an elementary school in Long Xuyen City, An Giang Province.
In the video, the five girls were seen holding cigarettes and e-cigarettes, lighting them up and smoking in the schoolyard.
They also offered cigarettes to a male student, inviting him to smoke with them.
The person who filmed the video warned other parents about the dangerous effects of smoking on children.
A leader from the provincial Department of Education and Training said that upon receiving the information, the department immediately contacted the leadership of the Long Xuyen People's Committee and requested them to verify the case.
The department also instructed the school to collaborate with parents and relevant units to address the issue and educate its students.
The department also urged all educational institutions across the province to enhance ethics and lifestyle education, strengthen measures to prevent school violence, and raise awareness about the harmful effects of smoking in schools.
