A flight departing from London landed at Phu Quoc International Airport in southern Vietnam on Thursday, marking the first time a direct flight has been made between the destinations.
The TUI Airways flight TOM064 landed at Phu Quoc at 6:20 pm after a 12-hour flight, carrying 261 passengers and 14 crew members from London’s Gatwick Airport.
TUI Airways, formerly known as Thomson Airways, officially changed its name on October 2, 2017. The charter airline is known for offering scheduled and charter flights from the UK and the Republic of Ireland to destinations in Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America.
According to a TUI representative, the airline will operate two weekly charter flights between London and Phu Quoc.
The flights will arrive in Phu Quoc from London on Wednesday afternoon (Vietnam time), and make their return trip the following morning.
A 300-seat Boeing 787 Dreamliner will be used to operate the direct London-Phu Quoc flights, according to the TUI representative.
In related news, a Bangkok Airways flight landed in Phu Quoc on Sunday, transporting 63 passengers directly from Bangkok.
The airline says it will begin operating Bangkok-Phu Quoc flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays starting in November.
Italian carrier Neos has also announced plans to operate direct charter flights between Milan and Phu Quoc between December 19 and April 2018.
The flights would depart from Milan every Tuesday and make their return from Phu Quoc every Wednesday using a 250-seat Boeing 767.
As of 2017, Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island has welcome direct flights from global destinations including the UK, China, Russia, South Korea, Sweden, and Thailand.
The island, a UNESCO-recognized World Biosphere Reserve located in southern Kien Giang Province, allows a 30-day visa exemption for all international visitors.
