The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has added Thanh Son and Bien Hoa military airbases in south-central Ninh Thuan Province and southern Dong Nai Province, respectively, to its draft airport plan for 2030, with a vision until 2050.
Per the CAAV’s proposal to the Ministry of Transport, the two airports will be used for both military and civilian purposes.
According to the plan, Thanh Son Airport will annually serve 1.5 million passengers by 2030 and three million by 2050.
Currently, Ninh Thuan has no civil airport and the popular path to the local area involves going via Cam Ranh Airport in the nearby province of Khanh Hoa.
The plan also calls for Bien Hoa airbase to serve ten million passengers a year, easing the workload of two nearby airports, Long Thanh Airport, which is under construction in Dong Nai, and Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.
If the addition of the two airbases is approved, the number of civil airports in Vietnam will rise from 22 to 33 by 2050, inclusive of 14 international airports.
