The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has proposed a sea ferry route between Can Gio District and Go Cong Dong District in the neighboring province of Tien Giang.
The project carrying a price tag of VND114 billion (US$4.8 million) will be put into operation in the second quarter of next year.
The department has sought the municipal People’s Committee’s approval for a plan to operate the route, build criteria for and establish a working group to choose a firm operating the ferry service.
The picked firm will be responsible for leasing stations, arranging ferries to transport passengers and cargo, and ensuring the service safety.
The capital for the 12-kilometer route will be sourced from private resources.
The operation of the ferry service, which can carry cars, motorbikes, passengers, and cargo between Can Gio and Tien Giang Province, is vital to meet the waterway transport demand and enhance the connectivity between Can Gio District to neighboring provinces, creating breakthroughs in socio-economic development, according to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport.
It will also ease pressure on road transport, the department added.
Once the Can Gio-Tien Giang ferry service is in place, it will pave the way for Can Gio to connect with neighboring provinces, contribute to the socio-economic development in Ho Chi Minh City and Tien Giang, and especially shorten the travel distance between the two localities by 40 kilometers and the travel time by 40-50 minutes.
It will also help reduce the travel distance between Tien Giang and Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province by 52-68 kilometers and the travel time by 45-65 minutes.
Ho Chi Minh City has put a similar service from Can Gio to Can Giuoc District, Long An Province into operation in August 2018 and another from Can Gio to Vung Tau City, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province in December 2020, in addition to ferry route linking Can Gio and Nha Be districts in Ho Chi Minh City, according to the municipal Department of Transport.
