U.S.-based social network giant Meta, formerly Facebook, will expand the production of its latest mixed reality Quest 3S headsets to Vietnam in 2025, a move expected to generate 1,000 jobs, according to Nick Clegg, the company's president of global affairs.
On Monday, Clegg revealed that plan when speaking to Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi.
They also discussed other potential developments, including making virtual assistant Meta AI in Vietnamese.
Meta AI is an intelligent assistant capable of complex reasoning, following instructions, visualizing ideas, and solving nuanced problems.
It can help boost creative innovation among businesses and entrepreneurs.
Clegg praised the Vietnamese government's data strategy and commented that Vietnam has a good education and training foundation, with a population of 100 million, most of whom are young and increasingly becoming dynamic and tech-savvy.
He also hailed Vietnam as one of the world's leaders in business conversations through Facebook's Messenger application.
The global affairs president and PM Chinh also discussed the latest AI trends and collaboration between Meta and Vietnamese partners, focusing on innovation, AI, and digital economic growth.
Clegg was committed to replicating investment programs aimed at boosting creative innovation in Vietnam and strengthening support for small- and medium-sized enterprises to grow.
Affirming Vietnam’s policy to create favorable conditions for foreign investors to succeed in the spirit of ‘harmonizing interests and sharing risks,’ PM Chinh suggested that Meta continue to discuss with Vietnamese agencies and partners the implementation of its projects in Vietnam.
In addition to collaborating with Vietnamese partners in science, technology, education, training, innovation, AI, and the Internet of Things (IoT), Meta should enhance technology transfer and support for Vietnamese enterprises to empower them to actively engage in the value chain and effectively utilize Meta's online platforms and applications, the premier suggested.
The prime minister advised that Meta should also collaborate with Vietnamese authorities to combat misinformation, implementing solutions and measures to block online fraud and other cybercrimes in order to protect users on social networks.
PM Chinh told Clegg that Vietnam is currently building the Data Law, setting up a national data center, and improving its management mechanism to facilitate businesses' engagement in creative innovation and technology fields.
Starting operations in Vietnam in 2015, Meta has coordinated with many ministries and other agencies to launch diverse cooperation activities in the spheres of digital economy and creative innovation.
Founded in 2004 in the U.S., Meta is an American multinational technology corporation that operates Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
Meta currently employs nearly 71,000 employees worldwide. In 2023, its revenue reached US$134 billion.
