The President of the Republic of France recently granted the title of Knight of the Legion of Honor (Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur) to Dr. Bui Tran Phuong – the president of the Ho Chi Minh City-based Hoa Sen University.

The award is proof of Phuong’s contribution to France, French Ambassador Jean-Noël Poirier wrote in a congratulatory letter to Phuong.

Tran Van Tao, chairman of the board of directors of Hoa Sen University, said Phuong received the prestigious medal for her contribution to boosting cultural and educational cooperation between the two countries.

“The recognition by the President of the Republic of France through granting the medal to Dr. Phuong is a joy and honor not only to her, but also to the entire school,” Tao stated.

The Legion of Honor medal is awarded by the French government annually to French citizens and foreigners who have made special contributions to France and the country they live in, thus enhancing relations between the two countries.

The Legion of Honor is the highest medal awarded in the Republic of France. It was first initiated by Napoleon Bonaparte on May 19, 1802.

The Medal has five main levels, of which Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur (Knight) is the highest ranking.
