Students wrestle with flood aftermath as school year starts in Vietnam

Wednesday, September 05, 2018, 11:20 GMT+7

Authorities and residents in multiple northern and north-central Vietnamese provinces are exerting all efforts to promptly deal with flood aftermaths as the new school year starts today, September 5.

Nearly 22 million students from kindergarten to high school officially entered their 2018-19 school year on Wednesday morning.

However, many from the northern province of Son La and north-central Nghe An and Thanh Hoa Provinces are facing immense challenges to begin their study due to the consequences brought about by recent floods.

In Son La, several schools were still damaged or inundated as of Tuesday, nearly a week after disaster struck the locality.

According to Nguyen Trung Huan, principal of Na Ot Middle School in Mai Son District, the venue is still buried under large amounts of mud.

The school year opening ceremony would be organized at the local cultural house, Huan said, adding that students might be able to begin their study by the end of the week.

In Ta Hoc Commune, Mai Son District, flashfloods and landslides previously damaged local traffic infrastructure, posing obstacles for students to travel to their schools.

Local teachers have been joining authorities in cleaning up the mud at the commune’s elementary and middle schools.

However, several damaged parts have yet to be repaired.

Meanwhile, about 300 students of the Con Nuong Boarding School in Nghe An Province are forced to begin their school year a week late.

“This is to ensure safety for the students as many of them live as far as 40 kilometers away from the school,” vice-principal Lo Van Thiep said.

Located nearly 50 kilometers from the center of Thanh Hoa Province, Quan Hoa District suffered the heaviest damage from recent floods as numerous houses had collapsed.

In Trung Son Commune, the namesake elementary school was also knocked down by the disaster, and more than 260 students are unable to start their new school year.

Local authorities are arranging temporary classrooms for the young students.

A similar situation also happened in Muong Lat District as local schools had been severely destroyed.
