Tax authorities in District 7 and Nha Be District, Ho Chi Minh City have proposed the municipal People’s Committee revoke the establishment license of the American International School Vietnam (AISVN).
The taxmen said on Wednesday that the proposal was sent to the municipal administration and the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Planning and Investment in accordance with the tax management law.
AIS American International Education JSC, the owner of AISVN, has owed over VND100 billion (US$4 million) in tax arrears.
The school, located in Nha Be, was suspended for 12 months, starting from July 1, as it had failed to prove that it could maintain educational operations.
At a recent meeting with the school, Nguyen Bao Quoc, deputy director of the municipal Department of Education and Training, affirmed that the school could not meet teaching conditions.
He also asked the school to avoid running any educational program and to conduct a survey to determine whether its students would continue their studies at the Nha Be campus during its suspension.
However, the school has repeatedly informed parents that it is improving operational conditions and will reopen soon.
According to the municipal Department of Education and Training, the school currently has only 28 teachers, a plunge from the previous 400, and no principal.
Besides, the school has yet to show evidence of its financial health and ability to maintain educational operations.
As of Wednesday, over 300 students have already confirmed their transfers, but they have yet to complete school admission procedures.
Meanwhile, some 700 other students have yet to confirm their transfers.
The municipal education department met with AISVN parents on Wednesday afternoon to encourage them to transfer their children from the school to another to start their new academic year, with classes formally beginning on September 5.
On March 18, AISVN halted classes for all students as most teachers did not show up due to unpaid salaries.
At the school, there was a time when over half of the parents joined its 'education investment packages.'
They lent the school VND3-5 billion (US$120,600-200,990) each without interest on the condition that the investments would be reimbursed after their children’s graduation. In return, AISVN offered free training programs to the students.
AISVN was established in 2006, serving students ranging from three years old to grade 12, according to the school’s website.
