The Politburo of Vietnam has announced that all public school students, from kindergarten to high school, will be exempt from tuition fees from the 2025-26 academic year, which starts in September, onward.
This landmark decision was made during a Politburo meeting on February 28, where members reviewed the initial implementation of the 12th Party Central Committee’s Resolution 18, which focuses on streamlining the political system for greater efficiency and effectiveness.
As part of this effort, the Politburo unanimously agreed to accelerate key reforms in 2025, including financial restructuring, to enable the government to allocate resources for nationwide tuition-free education.
The Politburo has instructed the Party Committee of the national government to work with relevant ministries and local authorities to ensure the successful implementation of this decision.
Currently, elementary school students in public institutions are already exempt from tuition fees, as stipulated by the Education Law.
Additionally, under Government Decree 81, preschool students have been exempt from tuition fees since September 1, 2024.
Several provinces and cities have already introduced tuition-free education in public K-12 schools.
Ho Chi Minh City recently announced a similar decision and extended free tuition to public and private kindergarten and high school students starting from the 2025-26 academic year.
The Politburo's nationwide tuition-free policy is highly anticipated and greatly appreciated by residents and education experts.
This policy is expected to have a significant impact on access to education and alleviate financial burdens on families, particularly those in disadvantaged circumstances.
Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam, vice-president of the Vietnam Psycho-Pedagogical Association, was cited by Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper as affirming that waiving tuition for students is a humanitarian policy that reflects the Vietnamese Party, state, and government's commitment to the well-being of the people.
