Ancient bronze drum given to museum in north-central Vietnam

A museum in north-central Vietnam announced Thursday it has received an ancient bronze drum from a local family who stumbled upon it last month.

According to Nguyen Thi Thanh Hien, the vice director of Thanh Hoa Museum in the eponymous province, its examination suggested the bronze drum, which is one of the country’s cultural icons, dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries.

The artifact was dug up by Truong Thanh Quang, who lives in the province’s Thach Thanh District, in October.

Remaining relatively intact, the drum is 38cm tall, weighs 20 kilograms, and measures 59cm in diameter, Hien said.

The artifact boasts intricate decorative patterns, including an image of the sun in its center, six rings of patterns, and four toad sculptures, one of which is now missing.
