The German Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City held a ceremony for the 24th anniversary of German Unity Day on Friday at Caravelle Hotel.
The event was joined by Hans-Dieter Stell, German Consul General in HCMC, Nguyen Thi Hong, Deputy Chairperson of HCMC People’s Committee, members from the German Consulate General in the city, and hundreds of local and international partners.
The event is organized to commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall, which was triggered by the peaceful opposition of 18 million people in The German Democratic Republic (East Germany) in 1989.
The collapse of the wall, which was erected 4 decades ago, also brought an end to the Cold War and marked the unification of Germany in specific, and an essential part of the European Union at that time.
The ceremony was also held to celebrate the long-lasting partnership of Germany and Vietnam, which was officially established in 2011, based on some hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese who are fluently in German.
“For us, the Day of German Unity is one which fills us with deep gratitude.” “We all remember and are very much moved by the historic episodes that unfolded such as the shredding of the Iron Curtain at the border between Austria and Hungary, the fervor of thousands waiting in the garden of our Embassy in Prague to be allowed to leave and finally the fall of the Wall on 9 November 1989, something which had been beyond almost everyone’s wildest dreams,” according to message from Dr Guido Westerwelle, Member of the German Bundestag and Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the occasion of the Day of German Unity 2013 “Today we can look back with joy and pride at what we have achieved together over the last two decades. With the help of the Two plus Four Treaty, Germany has found its place in the international community of the 21st century both in and with Europe.” |
