Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Pham Cong Tac is leading a delegation to partake in the 38th session of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) General Conference, which kicked off in Paris on Tuesday, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
The event focuses on UNESCO orientations for the next two years, with regard to the sustainable development goals that were approved at the UN Summit in New York in September.
The session, which will last for two weeks, are attended by representatives from 195 member states, associate members, together with observers, intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental organizations, the Vietnam News Agency reported. Deputy Minister Tac will deliver a speech at the plenary of the session on Friday.
During the session, Vietnam will run for a seat on the UNESCO Executive Board in the 2015-19 tenure.
The Vietnamese delegation will also introduce its gender equality education program that is being implemented at universities nationwide, and propose establishing a gender equality education network in the world.
In addition, the delegation will submit to the General Conference several documents related to Vietnamese cultural heritage.
Vietnam will also seek UNESCO’s recognition of its International Center of Physics and International Center for Research and Postgraduate Training in Mathematics as the intergovernmental body’s category-2 centers, according to Deputy Minister Tac.
