Vietnam, Cambodia celebrate 50 years of diplomatic ties

Vietnam and Cambodia have pledged to continue building a borderline of peace and friendship during the 50th anniversary of the two nations’ diplomatic ties.
A grand ceremony marking the half-a-decade relationship was organized in Hanoi on Saturday morning, attended by Vietnam’s National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, her Cambodian counterpart Samdech Heng Samrin, and Deputy Prime Minister of Cambodia Men Sam An among other top officials from both countries.
Vietnam and Cambodia established a diplomatic relationship on June 24, 1967.
Speaking at the event, Chairwoman Ngan believed that Vietnam and Cambodia would keep enhancing their unity, traditional friendship, and comprehensive cooperation, for the interests of both peoples.
“The relationship, nurtured by leaders and people from the two nations over many generations, is a priceless asset,” Ngan remarked.
According to the chairwoman, Vietnam and Cambodia have completed 84 percent of the placement of border markers.
Both sides will carry out the rest of the work in order to create a borderline of peace, friendship, cooperation, and sustainable development, the Vietnamese chairwoman said.
She wished that deep ties between Vietnam and Cambodia would continue to thrive for the peace and prosperity of the two nations.
During his speech at the ceremony, President Samdech Heng Samrin, on behalf of the Cambodian people, extended his gratitude to the Vietnamese Party, State, and people for their assistance in the past five decades.
He highlighted the support of Vietnamese soldiers in Cambodia’s battle against the Pol Pot genocidal regime on January 7, 1979.
The Cambodian leader asserted that the strong Vietnam-Cambodia ties that have been fostered over the decades should be preserved and further strengthened.
At the celebration, Colonel Le Cuong, who represented Vietnam’s former volunteer soldiers in Cambodia, reiterated that the friendship between the two countries cannot be changed by any force.
Prior to the event, Chairwoman Ngan held talks with President Samdech Heng Samrin in Hanoi on Friday, as part of the latter’s official visit to Vietnam from June 23 to 26.
Over the past 50 years, Vietnamese investors have carried out 190 projects in Cambodia, worth a combined US$2.89 billion.
Cambodia’s investment in Vietnam has reached $58.125 billion, with 18 projects.
The two nations have agreed to take the current annual bilateral trade of $3 billion to $5 billion in the coming years.
