Vietnam congratulates and applauds efforts made by South Korea and North Korea in successfully organizing the Inter-Korean Summit on Friday, Le Thi Thu Hang, spokesperson of the Vietnamese foreign ministry, said later the same day.

Answering reporters’ query regarding the organization of the historic summit in South Korea, Hang said the meeting has significantly contributed to peace and stability in the region and the world at large, including the acceleration of denuclearization on the Korean peninsula.

“Vietnam believes that South Korea, North Korea, and concerned parties will step up efforts to promote dialogues and carry forward active outcomes they have recorded over the past time to lay a long-term foundation for peace, stability and development on the peninsula and the region,” she said.

Hang added that such developments will meet aspirations of people of the two Koreas, and for the sake of the international community.

Following their first inter-Korean summit in more than a decade, the leaders of North and South Korea pledged to work for the complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

The two Koreas announced they would work with the United States and China this year to declare an official end to the 1950s Korean War, according to Reuters.

On Friday, Kim Jong-un became the first North Korean leader since the 1950-53 Korean War to set foot in South Korea after shaking hands with his counterpart Moon Jae-in over a concrete curb marking the border.

Their meeting was meant in part to lay some of the groundwork for U.S. President Donald Trump’s meeting with Kim, which would be the first encounter between sitting leaders of the two countries.
