Vietnam's Party General Secretary To Lam, State President Luong Cuong, and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Monday (Hanoi time) extended congratulations to Donald Trump as he officially assumed office as the 47th president of the United States, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In their letters, the Vietnamese leaders expressed confidence that under President Trump's leadership and support, the Vietnam-U.S. relationship would continue to grow steadily.

They reaffirmed Vietnam's view of the U.S. as a strategically significant partner.

Building on the progress in bilateral cooperation in recent years, Party General Secretary Lam, President Cuong, and PM Chinh voiced their belief that the Vietnam-U.S. relationship would further strengthen.

They emphasized that this development would be grounded in mutual respect for independence, sovereignty, and political systems, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation, and sustainable development regionally and globally.

The leaders also highlighted the significance of the upcoming 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries (1995-2025) and the second anniversary of their comprehensive strategic partnership.

On the same day, Vice-State President Vo Thi Anh Xuan sent a congratulatory letter to new U.S. Vice-President James David Vance.

At noon on January 20 (U.S. time), equivalent to midnight on January 21 in Vietnam, Donald Trump officially took the oath of office at the Capitol in Washington, D.C..

Following the ceremony, President Trump signed nearly 100 executive orders addressing various sectors, aiming to fulfill his campaign promises.

On November 11, 2024, Party leader Lam held a phone call with President Trump after his victory in the U.S. presidential election on November 5, 2024.

During the call, President Trump expressed his pleasure with the positive development of Vietnam-U.S. relations, affirmed his commitment to the bilateral partnership, and emphasized the importance of economic cooperation.

He also shared his fond memories of the Vietnamese people and his two previous visits to the country, highlighting the lasting impression Vietnam and its people had left on him.

Vietnam and the U.S. normalized their diplomatic relations in July 1995 and entered a comprehensive partnership in July 2013.

A decade later, on September 10, 2023, the two countries lifted their ties directly to a comprehensive strategic partnership, skipping the strategic partnership level, during then-U.S. President Joe Biden’s official visit to Vietnam.
