Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son on Tuesday congratulated Marco Rubio on his confirmation as U.S. Secretary of State and extended an invitation for him to visit Vietnam this year, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of Vietnam-U.S. diplomatic relations.
In the congratulatory message, Son emphasized Vietnam’s recognition of the U.S. as one of its most important partners.
He expressed confidence that the enduring partnership built over the past three decades would continue to flourish, advancing the Vietnam-U.S. Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
He highlighted the importance of further cooperation to address mutual interests and contribute to peace, stability, and development in the region and beyond.
Marco Rubio, a Cuban-American, was confirmed as the U.S. Secretary of State by the Senate on Monday with a unanimous vote of 99-0.
He is the first Hispanic and Cuban-American to lead the U.S. Department of State.
On the same day, top Vietnamese officials including Party General Secretary To Lam, President Luong Cuong, and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh congratulated Donald Trump on his inauguration as the 47th President of the U.S.
Vietnam and the U.S. normalized diplomatic relations in 1995 and elevated their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership in September 2023.
