Proposed $152mn Mekong Delta airport project faces objections

Friday, August 12, 2016, 11:03 GMT+7

Officials began voicing their reservations about a multimillion-dollar plan to build an airport in An Giang Province at a meeting on the infrastructural and logistical development of the Mekong Delta on Wednesday.

The public-private partnership (PPP) project has an estimated total investment capital of VND3.417 trillion (US$152 million).

At the meeting, organized by the Vietnamese Ministry of Transport and the Southwest Steering Committee, Tran Huu Hiep, director of the committee's Department of Economic Affairs, suggested that the project be canceled, citing high cost and proximity to Phu Quoc, Rach Gia airports, and the Cambodian border.

Hiep suggested that investment should instead be focused on currently incomplete transport projects over the next five years.

A representative from the An Giang Department of Transport also expressed his skepticism of the project, voicing concern over the depletion of agricultural land and adding that discussion on the project should be tabled until after 2030.

He recommended that the government concentrate its resources on upgrading and expanding National Route 91, a connecting artery between An Giang and Can Tho International Airport.
