Five out of seven people onboard a car trying to cross a railway track in Hanoi’s outskirts have been killed when it was impacted by a speeding north-to-south train.
The fatal accident took place at 5:00 am at the level crossing in the outer district of Thuong Tin, where there is a light and alarm system to warn of coming trains, but no fences along the railroad.
The five-seater car was carrying seven people when it tried to cross the railway and was eventually thrown 30 meters away from the track after being hit by the Hanoi-bound train departing from Ho Chi Minh City.
Two men and two women aboard the sedan died immediately, while another died en route to hospital. Two others, including the driver, survived but suffered severe injuries.
Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Ngoc Dong arrived at the scene in the morning to oversee the handling of the scene. Dong said the warning light and alarm were in proper service at the time of accident.
Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
