All 10 Vietnamese students competing at the 58th International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad held in China between April 20 and 27 won medals, including one gold, five silvers, and four bronzes.
This was the first time Vietnam has sent students to the olympiad, the Chemical Society of Vietnam announced on Saturday.
With all its 10 members winning medals, the Vietnamese team was ranked third at this year’s olympiad, after China and Russia.
The gold medal went to Giang Duc Dung, a 11th-grade student at HUS High School for Gifted Students in Hanoi.
Five silver medals were awarded to two 12th graders, Ngo Huy Dang and Tran Dang Khoi at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, Vu Viet Bac, a 12th grader at Hung Vuong High School for the Gifted in northern Phu Tho Province, Nguyen Ngo Duc, a 11th grader at Phan Boi Chau High School for Gifted Students in Nghe An Province, and Ta Quang Chi, another 12th grader at Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted in northern Vinh Phuc Province.
The four bronze medalists include Le Duc Huy from Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted in Da Nang City, Le Xuan Anh Quan from Phan Boi Chau High School for Gifted Students in Nghe An, Le Thanh Dat from Lam Son High School for the Gifted in Thanh Hoa Province and Dang Tran Nhat Minh from HUS High School for Gifted Students in Hanoi.
The 58th edition of the International Mendeleev Olympiad for Schoolchildren in Chemistry took place in Shenzhen, China, featuring the participation of 151 students from 26 countries.
The International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad, one of the world’s largest and most prestigious tournaments for young chemists, is traditionally organized by the Faculty of Chemistry at Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Melnichenko Foundation.
The olympiad comprises two theoretical rounds and a practical round, with each round lasting for five hours.
