An underpass has been opened to traffic at a traditional hotspot in the central Vietnamese city of Da Nang, as part of preparations for the coming APEC Economic Leaders’ Week.

The underground thoroughfare at the intersection of Dien Bien Phu with Nguyen Tri Phuong Streets in Thanh Khe District was officially opened at 3:30 pm on Monday, following a 10-month construction project.

The project has been finished in time for the 2017 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit as requested by local leaders.

Running from November 6 to 11, the Economic Leaders’ Week is expected to be attended by U.S. President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The installation of traffic lights, signs, sidewalks, and a BRT (bus rapid transit) route along the new path are also being finalized.

The underpass is designed in a Y-shape and is 409 meters long.

The structure cost VND118.3 billion (US$5.21 million), funded by the city’s sustainable development budget.

Lighting, drainage, and surveillance camera systems are being installed along the passageway.
