Four people, including three family members, have been killed after their boat overturned in the middle of a lake in northern Vietnam.

The tragic accident happened at around 3:00 pm on Sunday in Dong Lo Commune, Hiep Hoa District, Bac Giang Province, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

Nguyen The Son, 31, along with his son, eight-year-old Nguyen Giang Duc Huyen, and his daughter, six-year-old Nguyen Son Bang Tuyen, was visiting the neighborhood prior to the incident.

Son was born in Dong Lo but lived with his children in Hanoi.

During their visit to the commune, the three decided to take a trip around a nearby lake on a boat.

Their boat overturned in the middle of the journey, causing the three to fall into the water.

After noticing the accident, Nguyen Van Hoa, 45, a resident in Dong Lo Commune, swam toward the victims, attempting to save them.

As the rescue effort was unsuccessful, Son, his two children, as well as Hoa drowned.

Competent agencies were able to bring the bodies of the victims ashore around 6:00 pm the same day.

The lake covers an area of about 1,000 square meters and is two meters deep, according to a local official.
