Eight people were killed when a truck plowed into a group of cemetery goers who were walking along a highway in the northern Vietnamese province of Hai Duong on Monday.
Seven of the victims died on the spot while another succumbed to serious injuries after being hospitalized, Nguyen Van Khanh, head of a local traffic police unit confirmed to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Monday afternoon.
Five victims were injured in the accident that happened on the National Highway No. 5 section passing Kim Luong Commune in Kim Thanh District, Khanh added.
A truck that departed from Hanoi was speeding on the highway when it crashed straight into the cemetery goers, including many elders, according to the police chief.
Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh, who is chairman of Vietnam's National Traffic Safety Committee, has extended his condolences to families of the victims after being briefed on the fatal accident.
He also tasked Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The with leading a working delegation to Hai Duong to cooperate with local authorities to deal with the crash.
