A teacher in the south-central Vietnamese province of Binh Thuan has been suspended from work after being accused of having an affair with a tenth-grade student.
Doan Van Thai, director of the provincial Department of Education and Training, confirmed on Thursday he had ordered the management board of a high school in La Gi Town to impose the suspension upon the teacher to assist a police investigation.
The teacher, named H., was previously accused of having an improper relationship with a tenth grader, who is one of her students at the school.
A video clip in which H. and the boy were caught being together in a hotel room was also submitted along with a written accusation.
The incident was discovered in January, before family members of the student reported it to the school board.
“We asked the teacher to pledge that she would not continue the affair,” said D., the boy’s mother.
According to the school’s principal, the board has been working with police officers to verify the case.
H. has taught math at the school for three years, the headmaster continued.
“As the case is very complicated, it takes time to clarify whether or not the teacher had violated criminal law,” he added, implying she may face a charge of having an affair with minors.
Colonel Pham Duy Khang, chief of police in La Gi Town, affirmed that an investigation into the case had been initiated.
The legal age of children defined in Vietnam's revised Law on Child Protection, Care and Education is under 16. The schoolboy has yet to turn 16.
