A man had his arm cut off in a street brawl with five others in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday and had his limb reattached by doctors after a four-hour operation.
The victim, 47-year-old Nguyen Huu Sang, runs a herbal water stall on Cao Thang Street in District 10.
At around 3:00 pm on Wednesday, Sang was engaged in a heated argument with two customers - 37-year-old Pham Phong Trung and his wife, according to District 3 police in Ho Chi Minh City.
Sang and Trung challenged each other to a brawl before parting ways to prepare for the fight, police said after an investigation.
Trung then assembled his ‘gang,’ consisting of 37-year-old Pham Phong Quang - his blood brother - Vu Thanh Long, 35, Le Tuan Anh, 18, and another man whose identity remains unknown by police officers.
The five of them, armed with knives and machetes, departed on three motorbikes to the meeting point on Cao Thang Street.
The brawl broke out at around 3:30 pm, with the five-member gang quickly gaining the upper hand over Sang, who came alone.
Trung and Quang, both carrying machetes, chased Sang down into an alley and attacked him, severing his left arm.
Locals helped rush the herbal water seller to the nearby Binh Dan Hospital after Trung’s gang left.
The gang members have come to the police station for questioning but none have been arrested.
The victim suffered severe blood loss, dilated pupils, fast heart rates, hypovolemic shock and convulsions when he was hospitalized, a hospital representative told the press.
An operation was quickly carried out to save the man’s arm with help from doctors from the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Traumatology and Orthopaedics.
After four hours in the operating room, doctors were able to reattach Sang’s arm and the patient is no longer in a critical condition.
However, it will take two months to assess the limb’s functions.
