A woman in Da Nang City, central Vietnam chased after a garbage truck and recovered a bag of diamond rings worth over VND1 billion (US$39,900) after accidentally throwing them away.
Vo Minh Duc, general director of Da Nang Urban Environment Joint Stock Company, confirmed on Wednesday that his team of environmental workers had assisted a Da Nang resident in finding a bag of diamond rings worth over VND1 billion on Tuesday, Lunar New Year’s Eve.
At nearly midnight on Tuesday, Duc’s company received a request for help in locating lost property from C.T.M.H., who resides on Nguyen Huu Tho Street in Da Nang.
H. explained that her daughter, who had just returned from abroad education, had mistakenly thrown a bag containing several diamond rings, valued at over VND1 billion VND, into the trash while cleaning her house in preparation for Tet (Vietnamese Lunar News Year).
Realizing the mistake, the family contacted local authorities and learned that the trash from Nguyen Huu Tho Street had been collected and transported to Le Thanh Nghi station for compression.
By this time, the garbage had already been compacted into bales and sent to the Khanh Son landfill in Hoa Khanh Nam Ward, Lien Chieu District.
Upon discovering this, H. went to the Khanh Son landfill, where she requested that the garbage be dumped in a separate area for searching.
Environmental workers, using information about the collection time and location, identified the correct bale and sifted through the waste.
After several hours of searching, just before the Lunar New Year’s Eve, they found the bag of diamond rings and returned it to H.
In gratitude, H. gave a reward to Lam Minh Hai, a worker from the garbage truck wash and transport team at the Da Nang Urban Environment Company, as well as to the group that assisted with the search.
Vo Minh Duc stated that while this was not the first time his team had helped recover lost items at the landfill, it was a particularly special case due to the high value of the property and the timing during the Lunar New Year break.
“Despite the heavy workload on Lunar New Year’s Eve, our environmental workers proactively assisted and quickly helped recover the lost items,” Duc said, adding that their commendable actions will be recognized and rewarded in upcoming days.
