— United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Field Support Atul Khare congratulated Vietnam’s efforts and achievements in combating novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), including its peacekeeping missions in South Sudan and the Central African Republic, at Friday’s online talk with Deputy Minister of National Defense Nguyen Chi Vinh.

— Deputy Minister of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Thi Ha shared with the United Nations Vietnam’s economic recovery situation after the COVID-19 pandemic at a high-level online seminar on Friday evening.

Society

— Investigation police under the Ministry of Public Security on Friday launched legal proceedings against former Minister of Industry and Trade Vu Huy Hoang and his former deputy minister Ho Thi Kim Thoa over the charges of "violating regulations on state asset management and use, causing losses and wastefulness."

— At a meeting of the National Steering Committee on COVID-19 Prevention and Control on Friday, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc agreed to assign relevant ministries to prepare procedures to soon bring home 112 Vietnamese workers in Equatorial Guinea who are sickened by COVID-19.

— More than 1,000 military and police officers and local people are hurrying to contain a forest fire in Dien Loc Commune, Dien Chau District in the north-central province of Nghe An which started on Friday from a burning pile of garbage behind a local residence.

— An expert from Serbia has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, raising Vietnam's infection tally of COVID-19 to 370 cases, according to the latest update of the National Steering Committee on COVID-19 Prevention and Control on Saturday morning. The new patient was quarantined upon his entry, leaving no risk of spreading the infection to the community.

— Saigon Water Supply Corporation Limited (Sawaco) has announced that it will suspend water supply across up to 32 wards in District 1, District 3, District 11, District 5 and the whole District 10 in Ho Chi Minh City for pipeline works from 10:00 pm Saturday, July 11 to 5:00 am Sunday, July 12.

Business

— SM Entertainment, one of the largest entertainment companies in South Korea, plans to open its first store in Vietnam, based in the southern hub of Ho Chi Minh City. It will also be the firm’s first overseas store to include SMTown Store, where customers can purchase merchandise of popular musical artists, including albums and posters, and a café that serves food and drinks.

— The Vietnam International Travel Mart (VITM) 2020, themed “Vietnamese tourism looks toward the future,” is slated to take place from August 12 to 15 in Hanoi, with the expected participation of Vietnam-based foreign firms and agencies from Thailand, Singapore, Japan, the Philippines, South Korea, the UAE, Qatar, Peru, and Colombia.

— Ho Chi Minh City deputy chairman Tran Vinh Tuyen has approved a proposal by the municipal Department of Culture and Sports to organize 48 weekly street art shows with an estimated budget of more than VND1.4 billion (US$60,400) on Nguyen Hue Pedestrian Street on Saturdays from this month.

— Defender Doan Van Hau is due to return to Vietnam to compete for Hanoi FC in the second half of the V.League 1 2020 season following the expiry of his loan contract with Dutch side SC Heerenveen, his club announced on Friday afternoon.

— The UK has listed Vietnam among 75 countries and territories from whose citizens would be exempted from 14-day quarantine when entering the UK from Friday, July 10.
