Officials at Hoa Hiep Traffic Police Station in Da Nang said they have identified a stuntman in an illegal bike race on the Hai Van Pass after footage of the event went viral on social media.
The video shows a biker wearing a yellow top falling off his bike at a U-turn on the pass in the midst of a race, while the surrounding spectators cheer for him.
The footage drew strong public criticism of the daredevil event.
Investigation revealed the biker in the video to be a 17-year-old living in Nui Thanh District of central Quang Nam Province.
Preliminary inspection also determined the driver to have driven a motorbike without a helmet, rearview mirrors or driver's license.
Local traffic police are summoning the adolescent biker and his parents to the police station for further inspection.
Hai Van Pass, which connects the central province of Thua Thien – Hue with Da Nang, is known as the territory of local street racers.
The community often gathers in illicit events to perform and spectate motorbike stunts, which poses high risks of injury to performers as well as passers-by.
Local police are grappling to keep the problem under control, despite their increased efforts on patrolling the area, imposing penalties, and seizing vehicles of offenders.
