A man from Da Nang has been apprehended for posing as a university lecturer to steal laptops from students and faculty members.
Police in Thanh Khe District confirmed on Wednesday that they had arrested Tran The Anh, 35, from the central province of Quang Ngai, for theft.
Officers previously received a report from B.T.N.P., who works at the Da Nang University of Physical Education and Sports, on October 21, stating that she had lost her laptop and wallet after leaving her office for just five minutes.
Officers used CCTV footage to identify Anh as the thief and brought him into custody on November 11.
At the police station, Anh said he traveled from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang in October to find a job.
As he ran out of money before finding employment, he decided to masquerade as a lecturer at the Da Nang University of Physical Education and Sports, where he took a laptop and wallet from an office on the first floor.
Tran The Anh is caught by CCTV at the Da Nang University of Physical Education and Sports in Da Nang City, Vietnam. |
Anh also admitted to stealing a laptop from the University of Da Nang on October 25 and three others from Dong A University in the same city on October 19.
Police records showed that Anh has two prior convictions for theft.
