Vietnam health ministry announces 188,440 new COVID-19 cases

The Ministry of Health confirmed 188,440 coronavirus infections in Vietnam on Friday, in addition to 74,857 recoveries and 71 virus-related mortalities.

The newest cases, including 24 imported and 188,416 domestic transmissions, were recorded in 61 provinces and cities, the health ministry said in a daily update.

Vinh Phuc Province registered 22,188 of the latest local cases, including 19,326 infections added from previous days; Hanoi 31,899; Nghe An Province 11,057; Phu Tho Province 6,352; Bac Ninh Province 6,346; Binh Duong Province 5,574; Son La Province 4,728; Hai Duong Province 4,035; Ca Mau Province 3,859; Hai Phong City 3,297; Ho Chi Minh City 3,040; Quang Ninh Province 2,919; Ninh Binh Province 2,569; Ben Tre Province 2,090; Da Nang 1,683; Lam Dong Province 1,511; Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province 1,096; Quang Nam Province 322; and Can Tho City 174.

Vietnam had documented 218,444 domestically-transmitted infections on Thursday.

The country has found 5,441,358 community transmissions in all its 63 provinces and cities since the fourth virus wave broke out on April 27, 2021. Nearly three million of them have recovered from COVID-19.

Ho Chi Minh City leads the caseload with 563,711 patients, followed by Hanoi with 553,624, Binh Duong Province with 333,504, Bac Ninh Province 212,057, Nghe An Province 194,263, Hai Duong Province 116,796, Dong Nai Province with 103,415, Tay Ninh Province with 99,600, Hai Phong City 95,381, Ca Mau Province 88,685, Binh Phuoc Province 79,800, Da Nang with 75,630, and Can Tho City with 46,705.

Vietnam detected only 1,570 locally-transmitted infections in total in the previous three waves.

The health ministry announced 74,857 recovered patients on Friday, lifting the national count to 2,983,222.

The toll has amounted to 41,228, with 71 pathogen-linked deaths added today. 

Vietnam has logged 5,448,935 patients in total since the COVID-19 pandemic first hit the country in early 2020.

Health workers have administered more than 199.2 million vaccine doses, including 372,742 shots on Thursday, since inoculation was rolled out nationwide on March 8, 2021.

Upwards of 182 million doses have been given to the adult demographic of the country’s 98 million people, including 70,892,510 first shots, 67,757,474 second doses, 14,413,543 additional primary jabs, and 27,676,719 boosters.    

A total of 17,044,461 shots have been injected into children aged 12-17, including 8,748,035 first doses and 8,296,426 second jabs.
