Ho Chi Minh City police dismantle massive hornet nest near school, cinema

Police in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday evening dismantled a meter-wide nest belonging to a swarm of vespa affinis (lesser banded hornet) in the heart of District 1.
The nest had been situated about ten meters up a tamarind tree on Nguyen Du Street in District 1.
The Fire Prevention and Fighting and Rescue Police Division under the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Public Security was charged with dismantling the nest after authorities deemed it a threat to local residents due to its location above a crowded street near a cinema and elementary school.
Dozens of officers equipped with protective gear worked in the evening when the area was less crowded than usual.
It also helped that the hornets had limited ability to see in the dark.
The surrounding area was strictly cordoned off.
Two officers reached out to the hive by a ladder truck and used a big sweep net to collect it before sealing the net with duct tape to keep the bees from escaping.
It took about 20 minutes to safely dismantle the nest.
