Rescuers saved a score of people trapped in their houses by heavy rains and floods in the northern Vietnamese province of Lang Son on Tuesday.

Downpours caused the Thuong River to overflow, flooding many residential areas along its banks from 6:00 am on the day, according to Hoang Van Thoan, chairman of Dong Mo Town in Chi Lang District, Lang Son.

The unexpected, fast, and strong currents caught people in the Hoa Binh residential area off guard, leaving about six households with mostly the elderly, women, and children isolated.

Local functional forces carried out rescue efforts, taking the isolated residents to safety around one hour later.

A senior woman and her eight-year-old grandchild, who were swept away by floodwaters and stuck to a fence and a tree, were also safely rescued.

A total of about 20 residents were saved as rescue and evacuation tasks were completed by 1:00 pm on Tuesday.

No fatalities have been reported in the locality.
